Tina Turner on Amy Winehouse: drugs make it harder not easier to deal with fame
Tina Turner has said she’d love to see Amy Winehouse get off drugs because she’s an icon in the making.
Speaking at the Ivor Novello Awards at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London last night, Tina told the Mirror: “She is wonderful, her voice is absolutely timeless.
“[But] my view of Amy is that her problems started before her success. And the drugs are making it hard for her to deal with this success.
“When you buy drugs that feeling passes and you have nothing. I don’t even know if you can remember what that feeling was.
“You get nothing from drugs except a feeling and bad health. I prefer to spend my money on something I can see, I can use.”
Amy won a Best Song award for her hit ‘Love Is A Losing Game’ at the ceremony but dad Mitch Winehouse had to collect the trophy on her behalf because she was three hours late to the event.
Mitch told the star-studded audience: “Amy unfortunately couldn’t make it but she’s getting better and she sends you all her love.”
But when Amy finally did arrive - wearing a leather heart dedicated to husband Blake in her hair - she was on good form and made up with producer Mark Ronson after their falling out earlier in the month.
An onlooker reports: “Mark made a beeline the moment he spotted her. He gave her a massive hug and kiss and apologised for his comments.
“She jokingly hit him on the shoulder and they had a good laugh about it. They are definitely the best of buds again now.”
