Father’s Dad 2008: Who’s the best celebrity dad?

Since it’s Father’s Day on Sunday, we thought we’d run a poll to see who you think the best celebrity dad is.

We’ve selected eight of the highest profile dads and written a short parenting resume for them them (below) to help you make up your mind.

Brad Pitt

When he started dating Angelina Jolie, he quickly stepped up to the job as father figure for her son Maddox - one of the first hints about the existence of Brangelina was when Brad was spotted riding motorbikes around Angelina’s English estate with the then four year old boy. Angelina has indicated that it was a joint decision to adopt her second child Zahara in July 2005 then they had daughter Shiloh (May 2006) and adopted second son Pax (in March 2007) - and of course there are two more on the way. When the twins arrive this summer, Brad will have gone from being childless to a father of six in just about three years - and he’s admirably stepped up to the plate. He’s frequently spotted out and about with one or a combination of the children, and he and Angelina are said to alternate their work schedules so that one of them will always be at home to look after the kids.

David Beckham

David’s always insisted he’s a hands-on dad. He was no stranger to the school run when living in Madrid and now based in LA, he’s frequently spotted taking his boys - Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz - out for meals or to watch sports. The boys clearly dote on their soccer superstar dad - Brooklyn reportedly wanting to follow his footballing footsteps and Cruz heading out this week with felt-tipped tattoos on his forearms like his much inked dad. Through his soccer academies, David is also the sporty surrogate dad to plenty more children - and if that wasn’t enough, he and wife Victoria Beckham are said to be trying for their fourth child.

Gavin Rossdale

When Gavin’s wife Gwen Stefani went on tour the year after giving birth to their son Kingston, the former Bush frontman pretty much put his solo career on hold to take care of their little boy. Father and son travelled the world with mum, and the then one year old boy was frequently spotted at the side of the stage in Dad’s arms - and with ear protectors of course. Throughout Gwen’s second pregnancy, Gavin has shown support for his wife through the difficult patches - and his joy about expecting their second child.

Jamie Spears

Over the last year, Britney Spears‘ dad Jamie has repeatedly attempted to get his eldest daughter the help she’s needed even though it nearly ended their relationship at one point (when Britney felt she’d been pushed into rehab last year). Eventually he was given legal control over Britney’s welfare and assets in February and gave up his career as a private chef to concentrate on his daughter full time (until then, Jamie had always insisted on earning his own money and not leaving off his daughter’s fortune). Since then, the singer seems to have made giant leaps forward into pulling her life back onto track and Jamie is also said to be responsible for engineering Britney’s restored (and increasing) access rights to her sons.

Joe Simpson

Joe is both a dad and manager to daughters Jessica Simpson and Ashlee Simpson-Wentz, and is always keen to go the extra mile for his offspring - whether that’s presiding over a wedding ceremony (as he did when Ashlee married Pete Wentz last month) or managing his daughter’s boyfriend’s career and their whole relationship (Jessica & Tony Romo).

Kevin Federline

Back in 2006 if you’d asked just about anyone whether Kevin Federline would be top a Father of the Year competition, the response would almost certainly have been hysterical laughter - but he’s set to pick up an award to that effect tonight (albeit from a Las Vegas club). Kevin dumped girlfriend Shar Jackson while she was pregnant with their second child to pursue his relationship with Britney Spears. He and Britney then had two sons together, their births just less than a year apart, but when the couple split just after the birth of their second child Jayden, it seemed unbelievable that Kevin would have the gaul to try for custody. Then Britney hit her troubled period and Kevin stepped up. K-Fed now has full physical custody of the boys and with the courts keeping a close eye on the situation, is apparently doing a great job with them. He’s also maintained a close friendship with Shar and their children Kori and Kaleb.

Peter Andre

Peter and wife Katie Price have two children together - son Junior and daughter Princess Tiaamii - and Pete is also dad to Katie’s son from a previous relationship, Harvey. When Harvey, who is blind as a result of congenital disorder septo-optic dysplasia, was hospitalised twice in 2007 after household accidents, Pete stayed at his hospital bedside and Katie revealed that the boy couldn’t sleep without Pete, who he considers his ‘Daddy’, by his side.

Tom Cruise

Tom seems to have primary custody of 15 year old daughter (Isa)Bella and 13 year old son Connor from his previous marriage to Nicole Kidman as well as two year old Suri with Katie Holmes. Last year, Tom (and Katie & Suri) were frequently in on the sidelines for Bella and Connor’s sporting events matches, and the War of the Worlds star is also frequently spotted carrying his youngest daughter in his arms. Tom and Katie are also said to be trying for their second baby - and have moved to a larger home in Beverly Hills, giving them plenty of room for further family expansion.
