Wayne Rooney & Coleen McLoughlinWayne Rooney and Coleen McLoughlin have dismissed speculation that their Catholic wedding blessing may not be valid in the eyes of the church.

The couple were legally married in a civil ceremony in Santa Margherita, Italy on Thursday morning then headed to a local former monastery, La Cervara, for the religious blessing, carried out by Coleen’s priest from hom, Father Edward Quinn.

However, now an official from the local marriage office has said that the blessing may not be valid because 14th century abbey La Cervara has been deconsecrated. Father Mario Ostigoni is quoted in the Sun as saying: “We are not pleased.

“The paperwork was in order and permission was granted, but La Cervara was not suitable. How can the Catholic Church approve a marriage blessing or marriage service, if it took place within an unsuitable venue?

“If Father Quinn did carry out a blessing or some form of religious event it was wrong. It has absolutely no validity in the eyes of the Church and the Lord.”

But a spokesperson for the newlyweds told the Mirror last night: “They are definitely married, legally and in the eyes of the church. This was a meticulously planned wedding.

“Everything was checked out well in advance and everything was planned down to the last detail.”

The couple flew back to the UK over the weekend - and momentarily flashed their £1million wedding rings - but are expected to leave for their honeymoon in the Caribbean early this week.
