Naomi Campbell blames air-rage in part on racial insult
Naomi Campbell has claimed her air-rage reaction was provoked by a racist remark by one of the British Airways cabin crew.
On Friday, the supermodel pleaded guilty to six assault-related charges following the incident at Heathrow Airport at the start of April. She could have been sentenced to six months in prison and/or up to £5,000 in fines for each charge, but Uxbridge magistrates in West London imposed a total fine of £2,945 (including small sums of compensation for the police officers and staff involved) and 200 hours of community service.
But while she admits that she “took it too far”, she told Sky News: “I was called a racial name on that flight and that was part of my reaction.
“I was called a ‘Gollywog supermodel’. I don’t think that’s really fair, do you?
“I am proud to be a black woman. I am proud to be British. I am proud of the job that I do. But I do not call anyone names or colour of their race.
“As for British Airways, I don’t apologise. I just think they’re disgusting because there are people still waiting for their luggage.”
However, Naomi may find herself working with the airline for her community service - according to the People newspaper, she will serve the time at Heathrow Airport welcoming new arrivals to the country.
The newspaper quotes a probation services source as saying: “The probation service will come to a decision in the next few days but it seems she will be working back at Heathrow.”
But unlike her last community service stint in New York, “it won’t be cleaning the airport toilets because that’s gone out to contractors.
“Her job will [likely] be to liaise with passengers coming from abroad and give speeches to them about life in Britain.
“It will utilise her position as a celebrity. She will be based near passport control and spend more than a week speaking to asylum seekers and people seeking a new life here.
“She will be a kind of face of Britain.”
Do you think Katie Price's marriage to Alex Reid will last?
