Anne Hathaway’s ex Raffaello Follieri facing life in prison over fraud
Anne Hathaway’s ex-boyfriend Raffaello Follieri potentially faces life in jail after being charged with 11 counts of fraud and money laundering.
Follieri, who was dumped by the actress earlier this month after a four year relationship, appeared in a federal court in New York yesterday to hearing the six charges of wire fraud and five of money laundering, all of which he denies.
The court heard that Follieri had claimed to be working with the Vatican to dupe a business partner into buying properties from the Catholic Church. His charity, which provides vaccinations to children overseas, is under investigation.
According to prosecutor Reed Brodsky, “he was able to con a lot of people out of a lot of money over a long period of time” and he misappropriated “hundreds of thousands of dollars in investor money to live a luxurious lifestyle, including expensive restaurants and clothes; dog walking services; an opulent apartment in Manhattan that leased for approximately $37,000 per month; medical expenses for his girlfriend at the time and his parents, including a ‘house call [in London]’ by Follieri’s physician, which cost $30,000.”
Brodsky added that Follieri had tested positive for opiates on a drug test that morning and that he is a “high potential flight risk”, so the judge set bail at a staggering $21million: $16million of which would have to be paid in cash or in properties, with the remaining $5million from five co-signers.
The next court hearing in the case is expected to take place on 9th July.
