Naomi Campbell banned from taking part in Nelson Mandela concert
Naomi Campbell has reportedly been banned from taking part in the Nelson Mandela 90th Birthday concert tomorrow even though she has a long standing friendship with the former South African president.
According to the Daily Mail, Nelson himself requested that Naomi’s planned appearance be cancelled after Naomi’s air rage incident in April: “The man himself intervened and she was pulled off the list.
“He was disappointed with her recent arrest… All plans were scrapped when pictures emerged of her being arrested, wearing the baseball cap with the Mandela number (46664) on it. She will be allowed to sit in the grandstand and watch the performances, but that is as far as it goes.
“The organisers felt that this type of negative publicity goes against everything Mandela stands for and didn’t want her arrest to be associated with the charity concert.”
Last night Naomi was amongst the stars attending a dinner celebrating Nelson’s birthday ahead of tomorrow’s performance. Other guests included Elton John, Oprah Winfrey, Bob Geldof, Uma Thurman (& Arpad Busson), Leona Lewis, The Sugababes, Denzel Washington, Robert De Niro and Kim Cattrall. Will Smith, who is hosting tomorrow’s show, also attended the Gordon Ramsay catered event with wife Jada Pinkett Smith.
The concert tomorrow is expected to feature a range of stars including Leona, The Sugababes, Jamelia, Razorlight, Queen and Annie Lennox. Amy Winehouse is also expected to appear, as long as her doctors agree she is fit enough to appear.
