David Beckham on the family’s first year in LA: we’re really settled here
David Beckham has revealed that after a year in Los Angeles, his three sons have picked up local accents but he’s still struggling with some of the lingo.
He told the Sun recently that the family are “really settled” in their Beverly Hills home and he and wife Victoria Beckham don’t have “a single regret” about the move: “You’ll always have a few people who doubt you. But everything is positive and I am so happy here.
“Victoria is happy here and likes working here. The kids are happy in school and they love their life here.
“We have been settled every place we have lived. London, Manchester, Madrid. Los Angeles is no different.
“After being here 12 months, I don’t have an American accent but the kids are starting to get one. They’re at school every day and learning different things about America. This is to be expected.
“I lived in Manchester and didn’t get the accent. I’ve always sounded like a Londoner.
“Although I must say I’ve had a few issues on that front. I sometimes say something and some of the players don’t understand me. Then they say things and I don’t have a clue what they are going on about.
“The other day a team-mate said they had a raspberry, or it may have been strawberry. I can’t remember. They were talking about a grass burn. I couldn’t get my head around that one.”
But he added: “I will always miss England. Everyone knows I am passionate about my country and playing there. I miss my family, friends and a good old English pub.
“There are a couple over here, actually…but I do miss a pub with a good lager shandy and a Sunday lunch while watching football.
“I love Sunday roasts. Victoria cooked one for the boys the other day but I was away. I was quite jealous of that.”
