Poll: who’ll take over as Queens of the Gossip Scene?
The Queens of the Scene are dead … long live the Queens?
When we started writing Fametastic in 2005/2006, the undisputed Queens of the US Gossip Scene were Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie and Lindsay Lohan. It was all about their partying antics, their shopping for clothes and their random snogging of boys.
But now that trio seems rather passé - they’ve all grown a bit older and after various stints in rehab/jail, have settled down into loving relationships - Nicole even has a baby and if the rumours are true, Paris will be a mum soon too. It’s not just beloveds and babies though: Paris seems to have become almost a parody of herself recently, between the Pop Fiction monk thing and Presidential campaign escapades.
So who will replace them at the top of the Gossip hierarchy? Genuine, established A-list stars are pretty much ineligible for election because they’re not usually happy with the “perks” of the position - namely the constant paparazzi presence and the almost essential requirement to appear in reality television shows - and most are in long-term relationships too: the Queens (and Kings) of the Scene are usually single because flings are more fun to hear about than domestic bliss.
Will it be:
The British Imports
They’re a bit older and a bit more settled down than the rest but there’s no doubt that Victoria Beckham & husband David Beckham kicked up a storm when they arrived in LA last year. (wo)Maniser Sienna Miller is also said to be looking to move to LA permanently after falling for Balthazar Getty and making enemies in London. And if that wasn’t enough, Katie Price (glamour model Jordan) & Peter Andre are said to be thinking of moving west too. Are the married couples seen as too tacky to take the crown and Sienna too unrepentant for the conservative market (even though she has really nothing to repent for)?
The Disney Set
Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, the Jonas Brothers and, to a lesser extent, the High School Musical alumnus. They’re very young but their popularity with the tween set goes a long long way. After last year’s nude photo scandal, we thought Vanessa Hudgens‘ tabloid star would sky rocket but because she’s been so busy on her album and the new HSM film, she’s been overtaken by the younger members of the crew. Miley, Selena and Nick Jonas may only be 15 and 16 but they’re already getting involved in their own photo scandals (well, Miley is) and relationship rumour triangles. Are they too young for a tabloid ruling position or does anticipating the pleasure of watching them grow up add to their appeal?
The Hills-sters
Lauren Conrad and Heidi Montag have been kicking around the edges for a few years now but are starting to really get bedded in now with their own fashion lines and stuff. The loves and loathings of the crew have already been cover stories on quiet news weeks but a lot of the staging of events/scenes for the show smacks a little of desperation. What do you think?
The Kardashian Klan
Kim Kardashian - and her similarly alliterative sisters Khloe Kardashian & Kourtney Kardashian - have already done the reality TV show thing and Kim & mum Kris are rumoured to be in discussions for the next serious of Dancing with the Stars, which could send them into the next stratosphere of celebrity. Plus, Khloe’s already racked up prison time so could be the bad girl of the set who keeps things interesting.
The New New Yorkers
Led by the Gossip Girl cast - Blake Lively & Penn Badgley, Leighton Meester, Chace Crawford and Ed Westwick, this group also includes other New York socialite types such as Lydia Hearst and to a lesser extent Mary-Kate Olsen & Ashley Olsen. They’re all gorgeous and the Gossip Girl team have been tarred with the privileged heir/heiress reputation that’s been so popular for the last few years. But are we getting bored with watching trustfunders (or actors who play trustfunders) running around getting drunk in pretty clothes? And is it possible for people to rule the scene from the East Coast?
Return to the true A-List
Is the reign of the vapid and talent-deprived coming to an end? Are we getting sick of paparazzi shots of people - who are only famous for being paparazzi darlings - pulling pouts as they get in and out of cars? Do you think as our interest in Paris, Nicole and Lindsay etc dies off, we’ll realise that we’d rather hear less news about bigger stars than constant updates about nobodies in a 24/7 news cycle?
- Who do you think it will be and why?
- Will it be someone - or a group of people - that we’ve missed out? If so, have your say in the comments section below
Do you think Katie Price's marriage to Alex Reid will last?
