Guy and wife Madonna adopted the boy, who turns 3 next month, from Malawi in October 2006 - but the film director was rumoured to be initially opposed to the plans.

Now Guy, who already had a son Rocco with the star and is step-dad to Madonna’s 11 year old daughter Lourdes, has said that there is no doubt that David is part of the family: “Fatherhood is unbelievable. It has taken over my life.

“But something else surprised me - how much you can love an adopted child, the same as you can love a biological child. I didn’t anticipate that.”

Last week, Madonna’s spokesperson denied that the couple were planning to adopt a second child, a young girl called Mercy, from Malawi in the near future.
