Thandie Newton: I turned down Charlie’s Angels to avoid that sort of fame
Thandie Newton has revealed she turned down a lead role in Charlie’s Angels because she didn’t want to be that level of famous.
Thandie was offered the role of Alex in the 2000 film, with the part going to Lucy Liu when she backed out.
She explained recently: “In career terms it was a platinum opportunity. Or, as my agent put it, ‘a one-two punch’.
“I was going to do it for about 24 hours. But then I woke up and it just didn’t feel right.
“It would have meant entering that virtual world of stardom, but I’d been away from home for nine months [filming Mission: Impossible II] and it would have meant another six months away.”
“[My agent and manager] were appalled. They thought I was committing career suicide.”
