britney spearsBritney Spears is planning to return to Louisiana in the next few years and will build a house there for her family, according to her lawyer.

Her legal representative Michael Flanagan made the claims in his opening statement to the court at the start of Britney’s driving-without-a-valid-license trial yesterday.

Flanagan claims that Britney had not updated her Louisiana state driving license to a California state one because while she’s been based in Los Angeles for a number of years, she still considers Louisiana her hope.

After a jury was finally selected, Flanagan told the court: “She was residing in California - I’m not trying to get tricky with the terminology - but ‘resident’ has a different definition.”

Britney was found to only have a Louisiana driving license after being charged with a hit-and-run after hit a parked car in August 2007. She later applied for, and received, a license for California but not until after being charged with the misdemanour level offence. Last week, Flanagan refused a ($150 fine and a year’s probation) plea bargain on behalf of the singer, forcing the case to go to trial this week.

If found guilty at the three-day trial, Britney could face a maximum of six months in prison but is more likely to get a fine and probation.
