Britney Spears trial jury deadlocked; goes into third day of discussion
Britney Spears’s driving-without-a-valid-license trial is set to enter a fourth day after the jury was deadlocked yesterday afternoon.
The trial became last Wednesday after Britney’s legal team rejected a plea bargain of a $150 fine and a year’s probation (Britney’s lawyer Michael Flanagan was said to be looking for the misdemeanor charge to be dropped to an infarction). The case stems from an incident in a Van Nuys, California carpark last August when Britney accidentally hit a parked car with her own vehicle. She was initially charged with a hit-and-run offence but that was dropped after she paid compensation to the car’s owner but the charge regarding her possession of only a Louisiana state driving license has been pursued, even though she has since obtained a Californian license.
The painstakingly selected jury began deliberations on Friday but after three votes yesterday were unable to come to a unanimous decision - which is needed for conviction. The jury is said to be split 10-2, although it’s not been announced whether they’re leaning toward guilty or acquitting her.
A juror told the judge: “Everyone has become more entrenched in their position.”
Britney’s defence hinges on the idea that she may be residing in California but she still considers herself to be a resident of Louisiana and hopes to return to live there at some point in the near future.
Her lawyer Flanagan explained: “She says she’s a Louisiana resident. She wouldn’t be here right now if not for the fact that she has to be here with her kids right now.
“She considers herself a Louisiana girl. She’s building a new house in Louisiana. She’s maintaining her old house in Louisiana. She wants to go back to Louisiana.”
Britney has not been in court for any of the proceedings but if found guilty could be fined up to $1500 and sentenced to up to six months in prison.
