Kate Winslet: I’m still unsure of myself - once a fat kid, always a fat kid

Kate Winslet has revealed she didn’t think she’s make it as an actress because of her weight - and she still can be very self-critical.

The Little Children star told Vanity Fair: “I never had a desire to be famous.

“I was fat. I didn’t know any fat famous actresses. I just did not see myself in that world at all, and I’m being very sincere. You know, once a fat kid, always a fat kid.

“You always think that you just look a little bit wrong or a little bit different from everyone else. And I still sort of have that.

“I often look at women who wear great jeans and high heels and nice little T-shirts wandering around the city and I think, ‘I should make more of an effort. I should look like that.’ But then I think, ‘They can’t be happy in those heels.’

“And by the way, since I turned 30, I’ve had an acne problem on my chin. I’m just like everybody else - I just know how to cover it.

“Some [other parents on the school run] will even say to me, ‘Ok, what’s the secret with the skin?’ At which point I’m like, ‘Oh my God, there’s no secret. I have makeup on.’”

In related news, Vanity Fair have denied claims that Kate was airbrushed in the accompanying photo spread.

The actress appears naked and in lingerie in the pictures, showing off a slimmer-than-normal body but a spokesperson for the magazine insists: “There’s been absolutely no airbrushing at all. All she has had is the standard retouching they do on any photoshoot - adjusting skin tone and so on.

“I know she is thrilled with the photos. She’s in very good shape at the moment.”

Kate previously criticised GQ editors for adjusting her figure after a magazine cover shoot in 2003, accusing them of trying to make her look “six feet tall and a size two.”
