GMTV’s Fiona Phillips: I’m leaving the show to save my marriage

Fiona Phillips has admitted the real reason she’s leaving GMTV - it’s been ruining her marriage.

Fiona married GMTV editor Martin Frizell in May 1997, shortly after taking up her full time role on the sofa - but she told Heat magazine recently, it’s “been tough” living one of her bosses: “Sometimes things happen at work with management and I actively despised Martin because he’s part of management. That’s so unhealthy.

“It definitely got in the way of our relationship. Definitely. Normal couples talk to each other about [work] things, and we just couldn’t.

“He’s the editor and there are things going on that he can’t talk about.

“Sometimes he’ll come home really depressed about work and he’ll go upstairs and we won’t speak about it. It’s a been a real strain. I can say that now that I’m going.

“It’s been so difficult. Really difficult. I didn’t realise just how much [it affected us] until I resigned.”

Fiona previously said she was leaving the breakfast show to spend more time with the couple’s children, nine year old Nathaniel and six year old Mackenzie. Her last day is 18th December.
