Tom Cruise: I bought Katie Holmes’ engagement ring after our first date

Tom Cruise has said he fell in love with wife Katie Holmes the first time he met her.

The couple went public with their romance in April 2005 and Tom proposed at the top of the Eiffel Tower in June that year - but he told the New York Times’ Style Magazine recently that he bought the ring well in advance.

He explained he bought the engagement ring after their first date: “I knew I wanted to marry Kate when I met her. After our very first date, I was sure.”

But his proposal was nearly derailed: “At one point, I thought she was going to ask me to marry her first and I put her off by changing the subject. I wanted to ask her.”

Katie added that she was equally smitten from the get-go: “When I met Tom I was completely in love and, yes, I admired him growing up - he’s Tom Cruise!

“When I met him, he was so warm and I thought, ‘Wow! You can be a superstar and a human being’. He made me feel so amazing.”

The couple married in November 2006 and have a two year old daughter together, Suri.
