Wayne’s England teammates Ashley Cole and Steven Gerrard spared no expense in treating their wives at the weekend - Ashley buying wife Cheryl Cole new diamond jewellery from Tiffany and Co while Steven and wife Alex Curran were spotted out in Mayfair, London before heading out to Dubai - but Wayne and Coleen, who married last summer, chose to spend the romantic day in a £120-a-night room in the Merseyside seaside resort.

According to the Sun, the pair stayed at the new lake-front Ramada Plaza hotel but had to settle for a standard room because they’d left it too late to book a suite.

A source told the newspaper: “He promised her an unforgettable night and she won’t forget this one.

“Coleen said it was very romantic - just the two of them spending time together.

A spokesperson for the hotel confirmed the stay, adding “they enjoyed a quiet drink in our bar”.

Earlier this month, the couple used a half-price meal voucher to save £13.90 on a meal at a restaurant near their home in Cheshire.
