Madonna: I’ll adopt another child from Malawi if I have support
Madonna has confirmed that she is thinking of adopting another child from Malawi.
There was a storm of controversy when Madonna adopted son David from the African country in late 2006, which human rights and child welfare organisations in the country claiming she’d bypassed standard adoption procedures. In 2007-2008, she repeatedly denied rumours that she was planning to adopt a second child from the country - but has now said that it’s a possibility.
She told the Malawian newspaper Nation: “Many people - especially our Malawian friends - say that David should have a Malawian brother or sister.
“It’s something I have been considering but would only do if I had the support of the Malawian people and the government.”
“It is a big priority for me to educate my son about the world, but always to stay connected to his Malawian culture.
“He has a big map of Africa in his room with lots of arrows pointing to Malawi.”
She added that even though she has separated from husband, David’s adoptive father Guy Ritchie, the pair are still working together to raise the boy and their other son Rocco: “I believe in family. So everything between us is very amicable.
“We both agree that our children should always feel a deep connection with both their parents. It is our responsibility to give them that foundation.”
