Kiefer Sutherland has surrendered himself to police to be officially charged with assault.

The 24 star turned himself in at New York’s First Precinct police station yesterday afternoon following the alleged incident at a Costume Institute Gala after-party in the early hours of Tuesday morning. According to witnesses at the event at SubMercer in SoHo, Kiefer headbutted fashion designer Jack McCollough after McCollough accidentally knocked down Brooke Shields - but both Shields and McCollough denied that happened.

Kiefer arrived at the police station around 4pm yesterday and was charged with third-degree assault. He was released without bail but ordered to appear at Manhattan Criminal Court on 22nd June.

If found guilty, Kiefer faces a $1000 fine and up to a year in jail. He is currently already on probation following a DUI arrest in 2007 and could be sent to jail if he is deemed to have broken the terms of his probation with his new incident.
