Winona Ryder has said she doesn’t mind that Angelina Jolie received the attention and accolades following their 1999 film Girl, Interrupted.

Winona was an executive producer of the film, based on a memoir of life in a mental hospital, as well as the star - but it was Angelina who picked up the Academy Award, Screen Actors Guild trophy and Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of the character, Lisa.

Winona told Empire magazine recently: “I knew from the outset that whoever played Lisa was going to get all the attention.

“At one point they asked if I wanted to play Lisa and I said, ‘No, I want to be Susanna.’

“But there was no resentment. When it came out, people almost felt bad for me. But I expected it all along. I was really happy with the film, and really proud of it.”

She added that actually she was pleased that the critics and award show voters looked past Angelina’s looks to see her talent: “At the time I worked with her, she was battling her looks because she’s so beautiful.

“She wanted very much to be taken seriously and not just judged on her looks. And she conquered that.”
