Michael Jackson’s memorial service took place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles yesterday.
After a change in his family’s plans, the star’s golden casket, draped in red roses, was taken to the event which saw musical performances by Mariah Carey, Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson, Usher and John Mayer. Speeches were also given by Queen Latifah, Smokey Robinson, founder of Motown Records Berry Gordy and Reverend Al Sharpton. Michael’s brothers Marlon Jackson and Jermaine Jackson also gave short speeches towards the end, alongside Michael’s oldest daughter Paris.
Paris, Michael’s daughter from his marriage to Debbie Rowe, told the 17,500 crowd: “Ever since I was born, Daddy has been the best father you could ever imagine … I just wanted to say I love him so much.”
Michael wanted to be buried at his former home, Neverland Ranch but burials outside a cemetery are currently illegal under Californian state law. His family is expected to petition the state to allow the law to be suspended in Michael’s case.
