I really like how outspoken Helen Mirren is. I love that she’s got to the point in her career that she can admit taking drugs or say controversial things without worrying it’ll stop Disney hiring her or whatever. But she’s really sending out the wrong signals here.
No means No. No means no even if you’ve said yes at the club but then changed your mind when you’ve got back to his place. No means no even if you’re wearing a short skirt so “asking for it”. No means no even if it’s your husband or boyfriend and you’ve had sex with them countless times before.
Rape is not just something that happens between strangers in dark alleys. It’s something that happens in bathrooms, on sofas and in marital beds.
Yes, it’s “tricky” for those situations to get to court - it’s “tricky” enough for a violent rape by a stranger to get to court - but that doesn’t stop them being rape. And sometimes the most “tricky” things to do are the most important.
If you’ve been raped in whatever circumstances, contact a rape support group - such as Rape Crisis in the UK. They will support you whether or not you want to take the case to the police.
