Madonna is reportedly planning to buy a home in Malawi and learn “the Bantu language” so that she can teach her newly adopted son, David, about the country of his birth. An inside source told the Mirror: "She wants David to grow up with a sense of his own culture….

Madonna is learning Bantu ? This is a very, very true commitment to learning the culture of her adopted child since people in Malawi dont speak Bantu themselves, In fact, no one does ! Bantu is a language group the same way German is a Latin language, but no one actually speaks Bantu nor write it. The term Bantu and Bantu languages was also used as a derogatory statement during apartheid South Africa to refer to ’all black african languages" and people protested against the use of thei word because each of the languages had a name. Chichewa is a Bantu language spoken in Malawi and using a simple google search could have corrected this error.

Sitinga at 8:01,

I always thought that there was something very ‘Bantu’ about Madonna’s jungle act. I’m sure that her new little David is quite precious. But this week’s tabloid pics of the adopted child remind me of that little dancing man in David Lynch’s Twin Peaks series.

I am from South Africa, and it is NOT politically correct to use the term “Bantu”, as this was used in Apartheid days to classify black people.

Hi all,

I used the word in the report because that was how the Mirror was reporting it. I’ll have another poke around to see if I can find out any more information about the story to clear it up (exactly what she is planning to learn) and change the wording.

The two official languages of Malawi are Chichewa and English, although a one year old will probably not speak English. The other main language of Malawi is chiTumbuka. It is mainly spoken in the northern third of the country. There are sixty some other languages spoken in Malawi, although nearly everyone speaks Chichewa or ChiTumbuka.

I guess I need to share some words with the Mirror too then.
