How do the people that write these articles have jobs when they can’t even spell?

hi denvergirl i firmly agree with you. as i was reading the article i thought to myself this person can’t be very smart when they can’t spell finalize.
rae October 23, 2006 16:11
actually people in the UK spell it with an “s” rather than the American way with a “z”. Look at the web address, it’s a UK site…and you all thought you were so smart…you missed the whole point in the article…

Hi denvergirl and carol,

As you may notice from the .co.uk ending to our web address, we’re a British site and that’s why we spell it “finalise”.

Both “-ise” and “-ize” endings are allowed in British English; “-ise” is more common in non-academic situations and is particularly common in the media – that’s why we use it here.

Oops, meant to say unbelievable.

I liked this site, it’s neat. Good job!

Lucy Lastic is absolutely correct; both alternatives are correct in Britain with the ‘ise’ ending being more prevalent.

There are actually many more spellings that differ between ‘English’ and ‘American English’. Examples include; Aluminium / Alumimum, Analogue / Analog, Encyclopaedia / Encyclopedia…and perhaps the biggest differences being the convention in America to completely omit the letter ‘u’ from words such as; colour, labour, honour etc.

Perhaps Denvergirl and Carol might do well to realise that ‘American English’ evolved from ‘British English’ and they might also consider then, that ‘British English’ is the original ‘mother tongue’ whilst ‘American English’ is a far more debased demotic version with far less defined rules of grammar and syntax. It might be fair to say then, that rather than judge the proficiency of someone’s spelling against the metric of ‘American English’, they would be far better off by reading some good ‘English’ literature and by using THAT as the difinitive yardstick of proficiency.

That being said; America has produced some truly outstanding authors with a superb grasp of Grammar (and speling) such as John Steinbeck and Ernest Hemingway. Denvergirl and Carole might want to also review these author’s works.

First I would like to say Lucy you rock. Although a petty argument, it began with petty comments, and work must be defended. Lucy your a genius. Stevio your psycho. Anyone who must rant like that about such a petty argument on a comment board about Jessica Simpson’s break-up is a little more than a few fries short of their happy meal. Get laid man, and chill out. Its just a comment board, and not even about literature; it’s about Jessica Simpson’s reason for leaving Nick.
