Noel Gallagher: X Factor causes "instant mental illness" for the winners

Noel Gallagher has accused The X Factor and other talent shows like Britain’s Got Talent of causing “instant mental illness” in their winners because of the shock of momentary life in the limelight. The Oasis star told the Radio Times recently that The X Factor "has absolutely nothing to do…

Whoever wrote this article needs to get their facts right !!

X factor winner Shayne Ward’s career has not ‘Waned’ as you so wrongly stated – It is in fact going from strength to strength!! I suggest you research more in future !

I looked at his record sales in the nearly three years since he won X Factor.

His debut album sold around 800,000; his follow-up album around 500,000. He hasn’t had a No1 (in the UK) since his first single (he’s had two No2s, a third that peaked at 6 and another at 14).

His career certainly hasn’t slumped but it doesn’t have the same intensity as it did at the start – which I think is Noel’s point. When you start at the very top, the only way is down – and that’s difficult to deal with.

Noel is right and I totally agree with him. I only ever watch the auditions in these programs to laugh at the poor sods who think they have got talent. The rest is boring and predictable. Some of these people do actually have talent but they don’t realise how short lived a pop career is and at the end of the day, when you have a career created by a “pop factory” it will stick forever and you’ll never have long term success. I like to call these programs – Music for people who don’t really like music! X-Factor programs only appeal to the masses who buy their music from a supermarket with their weekly shopping.

I get what Noel is saying but sometimes its the only way that people with talent can get noticed, it does not mean they are any less talented than the next artist in my opinion. As for the previous winners, Leona is talented but very predictable and certainly no X factor, Leon has yet to prove anything but I have my doubts however Shayne Ward has emerged for me as the biggest star, having enjoyed his album and seen him on tour, he is where he should be and loving every minute of it. He is a true star.

I believe that established stars seem to begrudge any success of ordinary people with immense talent. Some of the new found stars have been pushed in every way and I need not mention names but Shayne Ward has proved himself in every way. My wife and I attended his solo tours and we fly over from Europe for this. He is such a telented young man in every way. His album Breathless contained 6 tracks which all could have been singles and yet only two were used.

He has an amazing voice with a vast range and most important of all has the XFACTOR, that elusive quality which is not found in many. In fact I have seen Timberlake and many other international stars and I believe Shayne is better.

He is adored in Asia and his first concert in Vietnam was a smashing success. He is loved in Europe and in South Africa is extremely popular and in the USA many people I connect with rave about him and are waiting for him to come to the USA. I have heard wonderful things about his new material which he is collaborating with well known artists and writing himself as well.

We only wish him well as he has earned the right to be called a popstar and has the charisma, talent and likeability to stay grounded. SO yes Neil I think Xfactor and Idol are a wonderful opportunity for talent to be found.

Mad for it! October 17, 2008 16:06
I am not into X Factor myself however my GF is so I tend to catch some episodes.
Leona has a very good voice no disputing the fact but has she done any live shows yet? I dont recall having seen any tickets on sale and its coming up to 2 years of her winning! Her fans must be keen to see her surely.
Shayne Ward – I was taken to see him this year in concert and I was very pleasantly surprised. He has got a very good voice and the show overall was very entertaining. He oozes charisma and has stage presence by the bucket load so fair play to him.Shocked to say this but I would go to see him again without any hesitation.
I am a fan of Oasis but the quote Noel made "X Factor causes “instant mental illness” for the winners – well I would be interested to know why he has said it? Maybe he knows something we dont but I havent seen any evidence so far!
